Under the direction of Reverend Herb Moore, the Lynchburg Covenant Fellowship (LCF) began working with Horizon Behavioral Health to address the needs of developmentally disabled adults in the Central Virginia area. Ron Dozier, a disabilities expert at Horizon was our contact and chief collaborator. Horizon’s first home was successfully built in Bedford, Virginia; and, using feedback from this facility, a new home was developed off of Old Forest Road in Lynchburg for six adults. The Lynchburg Home was built on one level with a “respite” apartment on the lower level for parents and friends of residents and others needing time off from the often difficult task of care giving for the disabled.
L.G. Flint Construction Company, a premiere, home builder in the area, also collaborated on the house and helped insure that the materials and construction were as fine as any home in the area. The house has served as a comfortable home for its residents for over 20 years; and, due to the high level of construction, has required minimum maintenance and minimum operating cost over these years. Because the home fits so comfortably into its existing neighborhood, and is in fact an asset to the area, there was no public backlash or “nimby” concerns’ ever thwarting its development.
